Warrior Cats
Burning Fire
By Sophie
Chapter 1
One morning in New-Leaf season, Sunpaw woke to go hunting with her mentor Cherryfur. Sunpaw mewed to him “Where will we hunt?” “Near the ShadowClan border,” Cherryfur replied “there is lots of prey around there.” They silently padded over to the border and caught the scent of a mouse, immediately Sunpaw posed herself into the hunters crouch and sprang. She killed the mouse with one sharp bite and took it back to Cherryfur. Meanwhile, back at the camp, their deputy Flourtail was organizing patrols to remark the borders. Two apprentices went out for an assessment to be a warrior. The rest of the Clan were either eating some fresh-kill off the pile or sunning themselves on some rocks. Then Sunpaw and Cherryfur came back carrying 1 blackbird and 3 mice, Cherryfur asked Sunpaw to give the blackbird to the elders and put the mice on the pile. Suddenly, the Clan leader emerged from her rocky cave and let out a commanding yowl “Cats of ThunderClan. Meet at Highledge for a Clan meeting.” Below her all of the cats slowly began to congregate under Highledge.
Chapter 2
Then the leader spoke “Magpiepaw and Sunpaw, do you wish to be warriors of ThunderClan?” “We do.” they answered. “Magpiepaw from this day on you will be known as Magpiefeather. Sunpaw you will be known as Sunglow.” Sunglow, Magpiefeather and the other cats cheered. After the meeting had finished Sunglow could see a hot flame appear and burn into more. She then realised that it was a burning fire. When she tried to get to Shimmerstar’s cave the fire had burnt up the narrow passageway to get there, instead it was now just a sheer drop. She was turning around when she felt soft breath in her ear; she twisted around to see who it was. It appeared to be Snowpaw, a nice WindClan apprentice. Snowpaw mewed “Hi Sunpaw.” Astonished Sunglow purred “Hi and I am not Sunpaw I am Sunglow!”
Chapter 3
Snowpaw bounded off signalling with her tail for her to follow her. She caught up and asked “where are we going to?” Snowpaw didn’t reply just led her into some reeds and hid. They peeked out from the reeds and saw a RiverClan patrol going out. Sunglow glanced at Snowpaw. Then Snowpaw quietly told Sunglow “we shall wait for a bit longer then attack Spottedstar and some warriors.” Unluckily Snowpaw’s RiverClan brother Turtlepaw crept up on them and growled “what are you doing?” they tried to run away from him but he was faster. Snowpaw moaned to Sunglow “tell him about the fire.” So Sunglow wailed “We had a fire at the camp and our leader is gone now. None of the dens are comfy now. We need to see it now.” So Turtlepaw left them and pelted away. The cats hurried off into the ThunderClan camp. They froze as the saw what happened; there was just a huge ring of fire and a few cats were wailing. But luckily they didn’t have a roof in camp and rain was rapidly pouring down and extinguishing the fire.
Chapter 4
When the fire was gone, all they could see was more embers because the rain had stopped. Suddenly a Two-leg came and poured water over the fire remains and the embers stopped glowing; but burnt sticks showed the cats that had made the fire. Shimmerstar had fixed the passage to her cave. She shouted “ThunderClan, fetch some moss, sticks and brambles to rebuild this camp. I will need some for my cave.” All of the warriors took the apprentices and fetched the things that Shimmerstar had said to get. They went back to the camp and gave their things to Shimmerstar to rebuild her cave. She already had used some but she had to cover the load of gaps in the walls. Padding towards them was Bouncepaw asking “where is Flourtail?” They thought for a bit and replied “we don’t know where she is Bouncepaw.” But then Flourtail bounded into sight, her creamy white fur scorched with burn marks. Bouncepaw had not seen her yet but ran over to her and asked “when can I be a warrior?” She purred and told him “tomorrow you can.” Tomorrow! He was finally going to be a warrior!
Chapter 5
After a restless night of sleep Bouncepaw remembered something: he was going to be a warrior today. He scrambled up in his mossy bedding, messing it up. Other cats were already awake and eating. He raced over to the pile of food and plucked out a plump sparrow. Sitting by the apprentices den were Seapaw and Wingedpaw waving their tails to him. They were telling him to eat with them. So he padded happily to them and told them that he would be a warrior today. They congratulated him by excitedly squealing because their best friend was going to be a warrior. Shimmerstar leaped on to Highledge and let out a caterwauling yowl “cats of HailClan, meet under Highledge.” But the cats didn’t need to meet because they were already there. Their leader spoke again “we will be making Bouncepaw a warrior today. He will be called Bouncepelt.” The cats cheered “Bouncepelt, Bouncepelt”. Bouncepelt felt proud. Maybe he could have an apprentice. Seapaw and Wingedpaw leaped over to him and said “congratulations”. Then Shimmerstar was on Highledge again with cats under her. They raced over and sat down to watch. A black kit was standing there with its shiny fur sleek. Bouncepelt recognized that Batkit going to be Batpaw. Shimmerstar said “our new apprentice Batpaw. His mentor is Bouncepelt.” Bouncepelt let the apprentice sit down with him.
Chapter 6
Batpaw slept peacefully only to by woken by Bouncepelt. He was shouting “Wake up we’re going training.” Batpaw followed Bouncepelt out of the camp to the training hollow after he showed him the land. “First we’ll do some hunting then tomorrow I’ll teach you some fighting moves.” Soon Bouncepelt found the scent of a vole and crouched down waving his tail for Batpaw to copy. “Batpaw, leap into the air and catch it,” Bouncepelt quietly instructed him. Batpaw did as he was told leaping into the air and catching the vole with his paws. He gave it a bite and carried it away to Bouncepelt. He purred in amusement at the prey, then purred “let’s get back to camp before the prey is devoured by the other cats.” His voice was hurried and fast. He clearly wanted to get back…for he had seen a long fierce cobra with eyes as green as sparkling emeralds. When it materialized out of a green bush it released its big jaws, revealing red sharp fangs.
Chapter 7
“RUN!!” Bouncepelt yelled through the loud hissing from the cobra. They fled as fast as the wind, the cobra right behind them, scarily clamping his jaws on thin air right behind their tails. Out of breath they rushed into the camp leaving the cobra behind. The cats dashed straight into Shimmerstar and reported to her about the cobra “We met a blood-thirsty cobra and it chased us all the way here but luckily we lost it.” Unfortunately a noisy hiss made everyone freeze. It was the cobra again. As the cats rapidly fled, the cobra slithered into the camp and headed towards the warriors den. Shimmerstar let out an angry hiss at the scaly cobra from her den.
Chapter 8
With a flash, Sunglow leapt and ripped at the cobra’s smooth scales with her claws. Magpiefeather darted to help Sunglow, signalling with his tail for all the other warriors and apprentices to fight. But the cobra lashed out with its big head, the huge red jaws exposed. It was going towards Seapaw. Sunglow’s ginger pelt glistened in the warm sunlight that was shining down on the noisy battle. Suddenly the cobra changed directions, lunging at Wingedpaw making her squeal with terror. Luckily Bouncepelt dashed in front of her, saving her from the cobra, but almost got himself bitten.
Chapter 9
Flourtail snarled at the slippery cobra. Shimmerstar ordered Bouncepelt, Sunglow and Magpiefeather to chase the cobra away with a flick of her caramel coloured tail. They immediately obeyed her and followed the fast cobra out of the grassy camp. They were almost at the steep rocky mountains when the big snake disappeared with one frustrated hiss. The cats halted, panting from chasing the cobra, almost crashing into a bramble bush. They turned and ran back home with their fur rippling in the gentle breeze. When they were at the camp they got food of the pile.
Chapter 10
They were going on a Gathering to talk about the cobra and fire. The Gathering was on a crumbling cliff, the meeting place was called The Cliff Rock. Once they were all settled Shimmerstar began speaking to her Clan “We will need to rebuild the camp from the snake and fire. Look for things to build up the walls and den.” As the cats went back to the camp they chatted to their den-mates about the day. Back at the camp they scattered amongst themselves and finally reappeared a few minutes later carrying sticks, moss and ferns. They built the camp with the materials they’d found. When they were finished they went to their nests and settled down to go to sleep for it had been an emotionally exhausting day.
